The Office Update Inventory Tool does not detect Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (893169)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 2000, when used with:
    • Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Pack 3 (SP-3)
  • Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office Update Inventory Tool on a computer that has Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed, Office 2000 SP3 is not detected by the Office Update Inventory Tool.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the Microsoft Outlook 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) View Control Security Update has not been installed on the computer that is running Office 2000 SP3. The Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update includes one executable file that is named the Outlctlx.exe file. This executable file must be run on each client computer that runs Microsoft Outlook 2000. You must install the Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update before the Office Update Inventory Tool will detect Office 2000 SP3.

RESOLUTION

Client update

If you installed Office 2000 from a CD or from a network location, follow these steps to download and install the Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update for client computers:
  1. Click the following hyperlink to the Microsoft Download Center to obtain the latest release of the Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update:
  2. In the File Download dialog box, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the folder where you want to save the Outlctlx.exe file, and then click Save.
  4. In the Download Complete dialog box, click Open Folder.

Note If the Download Complete dialog box is closed, start Windows Explorer, and then locate the folder where you saved the Outlctlx.exe file.
  5. Double-click Outlctlx.exe.
  6. When you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
  7. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  8. If you are prompted for your Office 2000 installation CD, insert the CD in your CD drive, and then click OK.
  9. When you receive a message that states the installation was successful, click OK.
Note The Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update cannot be removed from your computer after you install it.

Administrative update

An administrative update version is not available for the Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update. However, there are several options for deploying the client update in your enterprise environment.

For more information about these options, visit the Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update Web page at the following Microsoft Web site: You can still apply this client update to your computers if you installed Office 2000 from an administrative installation point, and you are using administrative updates. The Outlook 2000 SR-1 View Control Security Update is not a Microsoft Windows Installer-based update. The ActiveX control that this update is designed for is not part of the original release version of Office 2000. Because there is no reference to the Outlook View Control files in the Data1.msi file, you can distribute this update to the client computers without affecting the administrative update process.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft Outlook View Control (the Outlctlx.exe file) is an ActiveX control that lets you use your Web browser to view Microsoft Outlook e-mail folders.

The Outlook View Control is not installed as part of Outlook 2000. The control is only available as an ActiveX control download from Microsoft. Additionally, the Outlook View Control is released with Microsoft Outlook Team Folders 2000.

Note The Microsoft Outlook View Control Update can be installed even if you do not have the Outlook View Control installed on your computer. Install the Outlook View Control Update to help secure your computer. The Outlook View Control Update installs the updated version of the ActiveX control. This stops the earlier version of the ActiveX control from being installed if you visit a Web site that automatically loads the ActiveX control.

The issue that is discussed in this article only affects the following Office 2000 SP3 patching scenarios:
  • Installation or update from an Office 2000 SP3 administrative installation point
  • Client updates using the O2ksp3 full-file updates. This full-file update requires the application of each MSP and the Outlctlx.exe file that is included with the update.
To determine whether the update is installed, view the version of the Outlctlx.dll file. After the update is installed, the version of the Outlctlx.dll file is 10.0.0.3124.
