Some Traditional Chinese characters are not correctly displayed on a device that is running the Traditional Chinese version of Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002 and that has the Systems Management Server 2003 Device Client installed (893084)

SYMPTOMS

A device that has the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Device Client installed is running the Traditional Chinese version of Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002. Some Traditional Chinese characters are not correctly displayed in the distributed password policy.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because all the non-ANSI characters are converted to question mark characters (?) on devices that are running the Traditional Chinese version of Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Systems Management Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Installation instructions

To install this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Create a shared folder that you can access from the SMS site servers.
  2. Copy the DeviceManagement-KB893084-X86-ENU.exe file to the new shared folder.
  3. Log on to each SMS primary site server and SMS secondary site server in your environment by using an account that has administrative credentials.
  4. Close the SMS Administrator window if the window is open.
  5. On each SMS primary site server and SMS secondary site server, follow these steps:
    1. Connect to the shared folder.
    2. Double-click the DeviceManagement-KB893084-X86-ENU.exe file, select a directory for the extracted file, and then click OK.
    3. Double-click the Devmgmt.msi file in the directory for the extracted file, and then follow the instructions in the wizard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
