FIX: You may experience file system notification and removable disk problems in Windows CE .NET 4.2 (893045)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.2

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.2, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Symptom one
Files that are copied to a storage card may not appear in the Explorer window until you manually update the Explorer window.
  • Symptom two
If a memory paging operation is performed from a removable disk and the removable disk has been removed, the memory paging system may become stuck waiting for the removable media. This behavior may occur when one of the following conditions is true:
    • Executable code is paged. For example, a DLL or an .exe file runs from the removable media.
    • File data is paged. For example, memory is accessed in a new region of a memory-mapped file.

CAUSE

These problems occur because the following conditions are true:
  • Symptom one
The file system notification code has a race condition that sometimes prevents the notification of changes in the file system from being sent correctly.
  • Symptom two
When a disk is removed, the file system repeatedly reports an ERROR_DEVICE_UNAVAILABLE error instead of reporting an ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error. The paging system correctly recovers when a paging attempt receives an ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error. The ERROR_DEVICE_UNAVAILABLE error is meant to signal that the media is briefly unavailable. For example, an ERROR_DEVICE_UNAVAILABLE error may be reported during a suspend/resume operation.
