SYMPTOMS

In SQL Server 2000, differential backups may not contain Page Free Space (PFS) pages if the following conditions are true:
  • The PFS page was allocated between the last full backup and the differential backup.
  • The PFS page allocation was part of a file growth that is larger than 64 MB.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the conditions that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section are true. The PFS page may not be marked as changed in the Differential Changed Map (DCM) page during differential database backup. SQL Server can recover from restoring empty PFS pages. However, SQL Server may not recover when the PFS pages track text and image data.

Note You can determine database file growth by using Performance Monitor. Set the Data File(s) Size (KB) counter on the SQLServer: Databases(DatabaseName) object.
