This article describes the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services issue that is fixed in the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated January 27, 2005.

This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
- You receive a "The user does not exist." error message when you try to delete a user from the Web site collection
You cannot remove a user from a Web site collection in Windows SharePoint Services. When you click to select the check box that appears next to the name of the user on the Manage Site Collection Users page, click Remove Selected Users, and then click OK.When you are prompted to confirm the removal, you receive the following error message:The user does not exist.
This problem occurs if the logon name of the user in Active Directory directory service contains one or more single straight quotation mark characters ('). For example, this problem occurs if the logon name of the user is DomainName\ClaireO'Donnell.

This problem was first corrected in Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2.
