You receive a message that you have insufficient available drive space if you try to install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (892502)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1
SYMPTOMSIf you try to install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the Setup program tells you that you have insufficient available disk space. This symptom occurs even though you meet the minimum Setup program requirement of 700 MB of available free drive space.CAUSEThis issue occurs if your operating system was updated by using an IPAK. Windows Server 2003 SP1 requires a minimum of 700 MB of available drive space. Depending on the components that you need, the IPAK requires more than 700 MB of available drive space. We recommend that you have 1GB of available drive space to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 SP1 build 1247.
Note In some instances, the upgrade may require more than 1GB of free space. However, the Setup program may not accurately report the required space that is available for your installation. You can provide additional drive space by removing profiles that are no longer used. Removing the profile folder does not remove the profile entries from the Windows registry. By default, each user profile uses approximately 1 MB of registry data. However, a profile can grow very large, for example many hundred megabytes. To remove a user profile folder and corresponding registry keys, follow these steps: - Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under User Profiles, click Settings. Depending on how many user profiles you have, you may experience a delay while the dialog box enumerates the profiles.
- Click a profile that is no longer used, and then click Delete. You do not have the option to remove a profile that is current and that is being used.
- Repeat step 4 for all the profiles that you want to remove. When you are finished, click OK two times.
