The scroll bar in the Cross-reference dialog box becomes unavailable in Word (892420)

SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Office Word 2003, when you use the Cross-reference dialog box to insert a cross-reference to an item that is in a numbered list, the scroll bar in the Cross-reference dialog box becomes unavailable and appears dimmed. Additionally, if you click in the document and then click the dimmed scroll bar in the Cross-reference dialog box, the scroll bar may disappear.CAUSEThis problem occurs if all the following conditions are true:
- The numbered list contains 10 or more items.
- The Reference type in the Cross-reference dialog box is set to Numbered item.
- You click in the document while the Cross-reference dialog box is visible.
- After you click in the document, you click the Cross-reference dialog box and then try to use the scroll bar.
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem in Word 2003, follow these steps:
- Put the insertion point where you want to insert the cross-reference.
- On the Insert menu, point to Reference, and then click Cross-reference.
- Set the Reference type to Numbered item.
- Click the numbered item that you want to assign the cross-reference to in the For which numbered item list.
- Click Insert, and then click Close.
