Automatic Update Client polls the Windows Update Web site instead of the local SUS server for updates (892311)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Software Update Services, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Windows Automatic Update Client is running on a computer that is configured to poll a server that is running Microsoft Software Update Services (SUS) Service Pack 1 (SP1). Under certain race conditions, the client computer may be redirected to the Windows Update Web site to retrieve updates. In this scenario, a message that is similar to the following will be logged in the event log on the SUS server:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: WUSyncService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 107
Description:
Software Update Services failed to load some configuration information. Examples of configuration information include: proxy server configuration, content location, and client locales to support. Because not all configuration information was loaded successfully, the default settings will be used instead.

CAUSE

When the Automatic Update Client polls a SUS server, several scripts are run on the SUS server to retrieve user configuration settings including the SUS server content store URL. If the content store URL cannot be retrieved because of a race condition or because the client hard disk is full, the Automatic Update Client computer is routed to the Windows Update Web site. The configuration settings may be partially written or not written at all.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
Date Time Version Size File name
   --------------------------------------------------------------
   16-Dec-2004 23:58 5.4.3790.6 104,960 Wusyncsvc.exe
   16-Dec-2004 3:58:52PM 5.4.3790.6 67,072 FastDo.dll
This hotfix enables the SUS server to gracefully handle these race conditions by adding new retry logic to the SUS server. Additionally, if the download fails, the Automatic Update Client request will fail gracefully instead of redirecting the user to the Windows Update Web site.

A partially written or blank Settings.txt file may be created. In this case, you must regenerate the Settings.txt file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the following SUS server Web page:
  2. Open the Options page.
  3. Verify the settings for the SUS server, and then make modifications as needed for your configuration.
  4. Click Apply.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
