  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. In the What do you want the computer to do? list, click Shut down, and then click OK.

To turn off your computer when your computer is not a member of a domain, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Turn Off Computer.
  2. Click Turn Off.
The Start menu on your computer displays the Turn Off Computer option if the following conditions are true:
  • Your computer is a member of a workgroup, and you have turned on the Use the Welcome screen feature.
  • Your computer is a stand-alone computer, and you have turned on the Use the Welcome screen feature.
To turn on or turn off the Use the Welcome screen feature, follow these steps:

Note To turn on or turn off the Use the Welcome screen feature, you must have an Administrator account on a computer that is a member of a workgroup or that is a stand-alone computer.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type nusrmgr.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Under Pick a task, click Change the way users log on or off.
  3. To specify that users log on to the computer by using the Welcome screen, click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.

    Note A user logs on to the computer by clicking his or her user account name on the Welcome screen. If a password is assigned to the account, the user is prompted to type the password.
  4. To specify that users log on to the computer without using the Welcome screen, click to clear the Use the Welcome screen check box.

    Note The Welcome screen will not appear when you start your computer. To log on to your computer, type your user name and password in the Log On to Windows dialog box.
