"Stop Error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xA)" error message when you run Windows 2000 Server on a computer that has multiple processors (892045)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Windows 2000 Server on a computer that has multiple processors, you receive the following error message:
Stop Error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xA)

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Cache Manager SHARED_CACHE_MAP structure is corrupted on the Windows 2000 Server-based computer.

Note SHARED_CACHE_MAP is the data structure that is used by the Cache Manager to track the state of individual cached regions of the file.

The Windows 2000 Cache Manager has a small timing window. Therefore, when the Windows 2000 Cache Manager maintains lots of data in memory, some linked lists in memory that are managed by the Windows 2000 Cache Manager may become temporarily corrupted. In this case, an access violation may occur around CcAcquireByteRangeForWrite+0x390.
