You are prompted for a password when you try to open an intranet site in FrontPage (891822)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2002
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a local intranet site in Microsoft FrontPage, you may be prompted for a user name and for a password.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if your intranet site name contains periods, such as "http://Site_Name.Extension." To store passwords, FrontPage uses the Internet and Security settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Because of this, FrontPage interprets an intranet site name in this format as an Internet Zone site. Therefore, FrontPage uses your Internet Zone security settings when you open the intranet site.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must add the intranet site name to the Intranet Zone. Follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click Local intranet.
  4. Click Sites and then click Advanced.
  5. Type the intranet Web address, click Add, and then click OK. Repeat this step if you have more than one intranet site that has periods in its name.
  6. Click OK two times.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can set the Internet Zone to use an automatic logon process. Follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click Internet.
  4. Click Custom Level.
  5. Under User Authentication, click Automatic logon with current username and password under Logon.
  6. Click OK two times.

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer treats any fully qualified domain name (FQDN) as an Internet address, even if the address is on your intranet network. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
