SYMPTOMS

When you update the data in the query table in Microsoft Excel 2002, the update process takes longer than you expect to finish. In some cases, it can take up to 6 hours to finish.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a design change in Microsoft Excel 2002 that requires AutoFormat code to run during the update process.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Excel 2002.
  2. Open your workbook that contains the query range.
  3. Right-click any cell in the query range, and then click Data Range Properties.
  4. Under Data formatting and layout, click to clear the Adjust column width check box, and then click OK.
