How to remove a Network Information Services (NIS) domain after you migrate it to Active Directory by using Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 (891767)

In Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5, after you migrate an NIS domain to Active Directory, you may want to remove the domain later. To remove an NIS domain, follow these steps.

Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, or both Windows and Exchange. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.

1. Close the Windows Services for UNIX Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, if it is running.
2. Start the ADSI Edit tool. To do this, click Start, click Run, type %programfiles%\Support Tools\adsiedit.msc, and then click OK.
   
   Note The ADSI Edit tool is included in the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Support Tools. To install the Windows Server 2003 Support Tools, double-click Suptools.msi in the Support\Tools folder that is on the Windows Server 2003 CD.
3. Expand Domain [ServerName.example.com], expand DC=example,DC=com, expand CN=System, expand CN=RpcServices, and then expand CN=YPSERV30.
   
   Under CN=YPSERV30, one container is displayed for each NIS map that you migrated to Active Directory.
4. Under CN=YPSERV30, click CN=ContainerName, where ContainerName is the name of one of the NIS maps that you migrated to Active Directory. For example, click CN=passwd.
   
   If data for the particular NIS map is migrated to Active Directory, an object that corresponds to the UNIX domain appears in the right pane. For example, CN=UNIX_domain_name appears in the right pane, where UNIX_domain_name is the name of your UNIX-based domain.
5. In the right pane, right-click CN=UNIX_domain_name, and then click Delete.
6. When you receive the following message, click Yes:Are you sure you want to delete this object?Note Do not remove the other objects that are located in this container. For example, do not remove the CN=byname object if it exists or the CN=bynumber object if it exists.
7. Follow steps 4 through 6 to remove the CN=UNIX_domain_name object from each container that is under CN=YPSERV30.
8. Close the ADSI Edit tool.
   
   When you next start the Windows Services for UNIX MMC snap-in, the NIS domain no longer appears under Server For NIS.
