Information about rolling upgrade support with NFS components on Windows 2000-based clusters and on Windows Server 2003-based clusters (891754)

INTRODUCTION

This article describes information about rolling upgrade support for Microsoft Services for Network File System (NFS) components on Microsoft Windows 2000-based clusters and on Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based clusters.

When you run NFS components on a node that is a member of a cluster, all the following conditions must be true:
  • All nodes in the cluster must be running the same version of Windows Server 2003 or of Windows 2000.
  • All nodes in the cluster must be running the same version of Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX or of Services for NFS.
  • The Windows operating system must be installed by using the same method on all nodes in the cluster. For example, if one node in the cluster is running a version of Windows Server 2003 that was upgraded from Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows Server 2003 must be installed as an upgrade on all nodes.

The NFS server component, the Mapping server component, and all the corresponding administration tools are cluster-aware. Both the NFS server and Mapping server components are supported on a cluster when each node has the same operating system version and service pack level. Additionally, each node that is in the cluster must have the same Windows Services for UNIX version.

Note The NFS Gateway Service is not cluster aware. However, the NFS Gateway Service can be run on a cluster by using cluster resources that are included with Cluster Services, such as hard disk resources.

Microsoft Cluster Services supports rolling upgrades for cluster nodes. A rolling upgrade is a process of upgrading cluster nodes, one node at a time. However, during a rolling upgrade, one node in the cluster may have a different version of the server operating system installed. This may cause issues with the NFS components that are running on the cluster.

How to upgrade your cluster from Windows 2000 Advanced Server to Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition

  1. Uninstall Windows Services for UNIX on the cluster node that you want. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX, and then click Remove.
    3. Follow the instructions that are on your screen to remove Windows Services for UNIX.
  2. Install Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition. To do this, run the Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition Setup program.
  3. Install Windows Services for UNIX 3.5. To do this, run the Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 Setup program.
  4. Repeat these steps on each node that is in the cluster.
Important If you are running Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003, make sure that all the cluster nodes are running Windows Storage Server 2003.
