Client computers do not receive packages after you use the Distribute Software Updates Wizard in Systems Management Server 2003 (891603)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Distribute Software Updates Wizard in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 to distribute a package, the package does not arrive at the client computer. No error appears in the SMS Administrator user interface.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you are logged on as a user who has Read permissions for the Software Updates class. You must have Modify permissions to update the TimeAuthorized column in the UpdatesSummary table of the SMS database. The "authorized" update never runs because the TimeAuthorized value is not defined in the SMS database.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use an account that has Modify permissions for the Software Updates class to log on to your SMS 2003 computer. To assign Modify permissions to a user account, follow these steps:
  1. Log on as an SMS administrator.
  2. Start the SMS Administrator console.
  3. Expand Site Database, and then click Security Rights.
  4. Find the Software Updates class, and then double-click the account that you want to modify.
  5. Click to select the Modify check box, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
