Error 2147943458 is logged in the PolicyAgent.log after you install a Systems Management Server 2003 Advanced Client (891599)

SYMPTOMS

After you install a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client, the computer does not report inventory. The Systems Management tool in Control Panel shows the status of all components as Installed. The following error is logged in the PolicyAgent.log file:DownloadErrorInfo =

CAUSE

This error may occur if Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is not running on the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computer. Error 2147943458 indicates that the service cannot be started for one of the following reasons:

The service is disabled.
The service is not associated with enabled devices.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this error, make sure that BITS is running on the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computer. To do this, follow these steps on the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computer:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
Make sure that the Startup Type value is set to Automatic, and then click OK.
Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Start.

If the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computer is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and BITS is not listed in the Services tool, follow these steps to add BITS to the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computer.

Note These steps may require that you have the Windows source disc.

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
Double-click Application Server, and then double-click Internet Information Services (IIS).
Click to select Background Intelligent Transfer Server (BITS) Server Extensions, and then click OK two times.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
