Some performance counter objects are not available for a 32-bit process on a computer that is running versions of Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based systems (891586)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition for Itanium-based Systems
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based systems, some performance counter objects are not available when you try to gather performance counter information for a 32-bit process.

Note All performance counter objects are available when you gather performance counter information for a 64-bit process.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because 32-bit versions of some performance counter objects are not implemented in versions of Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based systems. Not all 64-bit performance counter objects have corresponding 32-bit versions that are designed to run on Microsoft Windows on Windows 64 (WOW64). WOW64 is a 32-bit Windows subsystem.

MORE INFORMATION

To determine whether a 32-bit version of a performance counter object is implemented in versions of Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based systems, follow these steps:
  1. On the Itanium-based computer, copy the Perfmon.msc file from the System32 folder to the Syswow64 folder.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  3. Change the directory to the Syswow64 directory.
  4. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    mmc.exe /32 perfmon.msc

This command runs System Monitor in 32-bit emulation mode.
  5. Determine whether the performance counter object is available.
If a performance counter object does not appear when you run System Monitor in 32-bit emulation mode, but it does appear when you run System Monitor as you typically do, the performance counter object is not implemented as a 32-bit version.
