Important This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry SYMPTOMSA user logs on to a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer through a Terminal Services session, and then runs a 16-bit Windows program. After the user quits the 16-bit Windows program, the Ntvdm.exe process does not quit. Instead, the Ntvdm.exe process remains running. If the Override settings from the user profile and Client Connection manager wizard option is configured on the server, the Terminal Services session may stop responding (hang) when the user logs off. You experience these symptoms after you install a security update on the Windows 2000-based computer. This security update is documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 840987 MS04-032: Security update for Microsoft Windows
CAUSEThis problem occurs because 16-bit processes run under a shared Ntvdm.exe process. The shared Windows-on-Windows (WOW) process does not unregister itself when the WOW process processes the quit message for the Windows 16-bit program.RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes.
