BUG: You may notice the installation process start for an unrelated program when you run the Visual Studio .NET 2003 Setup program or the Visual Studio 2005 Setup program installation (891398)

SYMPTOMS

You run the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Setup program or the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Setup program and then click one of the following options:
  • You click Step 1 to install the Windows Component Updates/Pre-Requisites.
  • You click Step 2 to install Visual Studio .NET 2003 or Visual Studio 2005.
If you do this, the Visual Studio .NET 2003 Setup program or the Visual Studio 2005 Setup program do not start. However, you may see the installation process start for an unrelated program.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a registry key that was left behind by the installation of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\setup.exe

  3. Right-click Default, and then click Delete.
  4. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click OK.
  5. Click File, and then click Exit.
  6. Run the Visual Studio .NET 2003 Setup program or the Visual Studio 2005 Setup program.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
