You receive the "A communication error occurred" error message when you start Money 2005 (891337)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Money 2005 Standard

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Money 2005, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
A communication error occurred. Please try your call again. If you continue to have problems call your financial institution's Online Services Customer Support.
You may receive the following error message details after Money 2005 quits:

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • An account in Money 2005 is linked with MSN Bill Pay.
  • You disabled MSN Bill Pay for that account.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install a version of Money 2005 that does not include the 1105 update, and then remove the bank that is associated with the account that is mentioned in the "Cause" section in a copy of your data file. To do this, use one of the following methods.

If you used CD-based media to install Money 2005

  1. Remove Money 2005 from your computer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type Appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click Microsoft Money 2005, click Change/Remove, click Yes, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove Money 2005 from your computer.
  2. Reinstall Money 2005. To do this, insert the Money 2005 into your CD or DVD drive, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install Money 2005.
  3. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  4. Click All files and folders.
  5. In the All or part of the file name box, type *.m14, click My Computer in the Look in box, and then click Search.
  6. In the list of found files, double-click the *.m14 file for your Money 2005 file.
  7. Sign in to Microsoft .NET Passport if you have to, and then click to select the Work Offline check box. If you are prompted to download an update, click No.
  8. In Money 2005, remove the link to MSN Bill Pay. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Banking, and then click Account List.
    2. In the account list, right-click the account that you want, and then click See Account Settings.
    3. In the Financial Institution field, delete MSN Bill Pay. Leave the field blank, or type the name of a different financial institution.

      Note If you are not sure which accounts are linked with MSN Bill Pay, you must check all the accounts. This includes closed accounts. To view closed accounts, click Banking, click Account List, click Sort account list by, and then click to clear the Hide closed accounts check box.
  9. Quit Money 2005.
  10. Start Money 2005.
  11. When you are prompted to download an update, click Yes, and then follow the prompts that appear on the screen to convert your file.

If you downloaded the Money 2005 installation files from the Internet

Note These steps require that you have an earlier CD-based version of Microsoft Money.
  1. Install your earlier version of Money. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type Appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click Microsoft Money 2005, click Change/Remove, and then click Yes.
    3. Install your earlier version of Money from your CD-based media. To do this, insert the Money CD-ROM into your CD or DVD drive, and then follow the prompts that appear on the screen to install Money.
  2. Locate your data file for your earlier version of Money. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    2. Click All files and folders.
    3. In the All or part of the file name box, type *.m12 to locate the backup of your Microsoft Money 2004 file , click My Computer in the Look in box, and then click Search.

      Note If you want to locate a backup of an earlier version of Microsoft Money, type *.m11 for Microsoft Money 2003, type *.m10 for Microsoft Money 2002, or type *.m09 for Microsoft Money 2001.
  3. In the list of found files, double-click the data file for your earlier version of Money. Sign in to .NET Passport if you have to.
  4. In Money, remove the link to MSN Bill Pay. To do this in Money 2004, follow these steps:
    1. Start Money 2004, and then click Account List.
    2. In the account list, right-click the account that you want, and then click See Account Details.
    3. In the Financial Institution box, remove MSN Bill Pay. Leave the box blank.

      Note If you are not sure which accounts are linked with MSN Bill Pay, you must check all the accounts. This includes closed accounts. To view closed accounts, click Account List, click Sort account list by, and then click to clear the Hide closed accounts check box.
  5. Quit Money.
  6. Install Money 2005 from the downloaded installation files.
  7. Start Money 2005.
  8. When you are prompted to download an update, click Yes, and then follow the prompts that appear on the screen to convert your file.
