Some services are not restarted after you install Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2004 (891259)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004, some services stop responding during the installation. When the installation is completed, the services that depend on those services that stopped responding may not be restarted.

The following services are affected if they are hosted on the ISA Server 2004-based computer:
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA)
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Web sites

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Manually restart each service.

    Note There are no indications in the event log that any services are stopped.
  • Restart the ISA Server 2004-based computer to restart the services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

After you install ISA Server 2004, ISA Server 2004 restarts the IISAdmin service. However, the services that depend on the IISAdmin service do not restart. Therefore, the following conditions occur:
  • Exchange is unavailable.
  • Any Web sites that are hosted on the ISA Server 2004-based computer stop.
  • The Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) service stops.
  • If you are running ISA Server 2004 on a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer, you cannot successfully use the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard to configure your Internet connection.
The following services stop after the Setup program restarts the IISAdmin service and must be restarted:
  • Microsoft Exchange IMAP4
  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store
  • Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks
  • Microsoft Exchange POP3
  • Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine
  • NNTP
  • World Wide Web Publishing Service
  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
