You receive a "Microsoft Project cannot log you on automatically using your Windows user account" error message when you try to log on to Project Server 2003 or to Project Server 2002 (891168)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to log on to Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 by using Microsoft Project Professional 2003 or by using Microsoft Project Web Access 2003, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Project cannot log you on automatically using your Windows user account. You need to change the account in your profile, or contact your Microsoft Project Server administrator to check if your Windows user account exists and is a valid account on the Microsoft Project Server. (5003)

This error message may also appear when you try to log on to Microsoft Project Server 2002 by using Microsoft Project Professional 2002.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:

Anonymous access is enabled for the Web site in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 that contains the ProjectServer virtual directory. For example, this issue may occur if the Default Web site in IIS 6.0 is configured to use anonymous access and Integrated Windows authentication.
The Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration component is enabled in Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure the Web site that contains the ProjectServer virtual directory to use only Integrated Windows authentication. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
2. Expand ServerName, and then expand Web Sites.
3. Right-click the Web site, and then click Properties. For example, right-click Default Web Site, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Directory Security tab.
5. Click Edit under Authentication and access control.
6. Click to clear the Enable anonymous access check box.
7. Verify that the Integrated Windows authentication check box is selected. If it is not, click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box.
8. Click OK.
Restart IIS. To do this, click Start, click Run, type iisreset in the Open box, and then click OK.

The Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration component configures a number of security settings that define how users browse Internet and intranet Web sites on the server. By default, the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration component is enabled in Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows Server 2003-based computers. The settings limit the types of content that a local user can view by using Internet Explorer, and help prevent local users from downloading harmful files from the Internet. The Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration settings do not affect remote users who view content on the server.
