You receive an error message when you start the MDX sample application in SQL Server 2000 (891046)

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) sample application after you install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, you may receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:

Error 1

Unable to open connection.
Unspecified error.

Error 2

Unable to open connection.
Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You installed Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a (SP3a) database components.
  • You did not install SQL Server 2000 SP3a Analysis Services components.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain and install SQL Server 2000 SP3a Analysis Services components. For more information about how to download and install the SQL Server 2000 SP3a Analysis Services components, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
