Microsoft has released the Excel 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package for Microsoft Office Excel 2003. This article describes the following items about the hotfix package:

INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Office Excel 2003 issues that are fixed in the Excel 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated December 18, 2004.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • When you save a chart as a Web page (.htm), the chart may not match the chart that you saved in Excel 2003. For example, the columns in the chart that you saved in Excel 2003 may appear as one column in the chart on the Web page.
  • If you open a workbook that is protected in Excel 2003 and that workbook contains a PivotTable, you may receive the following error message:
    Unable to read file.
    This problem may occur when all the following conditions are true:
    • The workbook is protected.

      Note To protect a workbook in Excel 2003, point to Protection on the Tools menu, and then click Protect Workbook.
    • The workbook has the AutoRecovery feature turned on.
    • At least one AutoRecovery file for the workbook has been saved.
    • You saved the workbook before you closed it.
    Note If you turn off the AutoRecovery feature for the workbook, you may prevent the problem.
  • An Excel 2003 workbook is shared by two users. The first user saved the changes to the workbook, and then the user closed Excel 2003. If the second user "unshared" the workbook after it was shared, the second user typically does not receive a warning message. Therefore, the workbook was not updated to include the changes that were saved by the first user.
  • When you programmatically add a new worksheet to an Excel object that is contained in an Excel window that is not currently the active window, the worksheet is not added, and you receive the following error message:
    The server threw an exception. (0x80010105)

  • The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office 2003 SP1 installed.

  • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with SP1 installed or on a computer without SP1 installed. However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on Office 2003 with SP1 than we have on Office 2003 without SP1. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 without SP1, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
