"Generic failure" error message when you run a custom script that uses the UpdateContactTime method of the MSFT_Computer WMI class in Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 (890948)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you try to monitor a non-Microsoft Windows-based computer by using a custom script in Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005, you receive a Windows Scripting Host error message that is similar to the following:
Error: Generic failure
Code: 80041001
Source: SWbemObject
In this scenario, you may not receive an accurate Last contact time timestamp for any non-Windows-based computers that you are monitoring through MOM 2005.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when your custom script uses the UpdateContactTime method of the MSFT_Computer WMI class. In this scenario, MOM 2005 cannot correctly interpret the UpdateContactTime method. Therefore, a "generic failure" error occurs.

After you apply the hotfix that is described in the "Resolution" section, the UpdateContactTime method of the MSFT_Computer WMI class correctly updates the contact time.
