White text appears on a white background when you try to create an e-mail message in Word 2002 (890896)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Microsoft Word 2002 as your e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook 2002, the text that you type in the body of the message appears as white letters on a white background. You cannot see what you type. You also experience this symptom when you try to create a new e-mail message in Word 2002.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the space next to the Theme button on the Personal Stationery tab in E-mail Options is blank.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, select the theme that you want to use in e-mail that is created in Word 2002. If you do not want to use a theme, you must select the No Theme option.
  1. In Word 2002, on the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the General tab, and then click E-Mail Options.
  3. Click the Personal Stationery tab, and then click Theme.
  4. In the Choose a Theme list, click the name of the theme you want to use. If you do not want to use a theme, click No Theme.
  5. Click OK three times.

Additional symptoms

When you view the font options in the FONT dialog box, the Font Color box does not contain a color selection. You may expect the Font Color box to contain a rectangle that is filled with the color white.

On the Personal Stationery tab in the E-mail Options dialog box, the following conditions are true:
  • The space next to the Theme button is blank. You may expect this space to display the name of the theme or the text No theme currently selected.
  • In the New mail messages area, the Font button appears dimmed, and the text Sample Text does not appear in the sample box.
  • In the Replying or forwarding messages area, the Font button appears dimmed, and the text Sample Text does not appear in the sample box.
