SYMPTOMS

When you perform large in-memory sort operations in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, SQL Server may not yield to the SQL Server User Mode Scheduler (UMS). This behavior could lead to stalled worker requests. When this problem occurs, connection timeouts and other time-sensitive operations may fail. When this problem occurs, typically you receive a 17883 error message in the SQL Server error log. For example, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
2003-03-21 08:22:20.27 server Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0
2003-03-21 08:22:20.27 server Process 51:0 (dbc) UMS Context 0x018DA930 appears to be non-yielding on Scheduler 0.

MORE INFORMATION

The following factors are guidelines for time-critical programs:
  • The sort operation must occur in memory and must contain at least one million rows. Typically, 120 million or more rows are required to experience the problem.
  • The computer must be able to support a very large sort memory grant. This grant is generally 8 gigabytes (GB) or larger. To accomplish this grant, the computer needs approximately 64 GB or more of physical memory.
Note Processor speed, memory, and disk speed can cause factors to vary.
