You may receive a "Stop 0x000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error message after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (890463)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition (Itanium)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that has a bridged Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) display adapter.
  • This display adapter is inserted into a PCI Express (PCIe) slot in the computer.
  • You upgrade the computer to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
In this scenario, you may receive the following error message when the computer restarts:
*** Stop 0x000007B (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

CAUSE

This problem may occur if your computer uses an add-on PCI adapter that has an integrated PCI-to-PCI bridge and graphics adaptor. An example of this type of device is a remote access adapter that has multiple, integrated devices such as graphics and integrated device electronics (IDE) or Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) controllers.

This problem occurs because the ISA Enable and VGA Enable bridge control registers may become incorrectly set. Therefore, the boot controller may not be assigned the correct PCI resources. If the boot controller is not assigned the correct PCI resources during the startup process, the hard disk from which Windows starts becomes inaccessible. Therefore, you experience the Stop error that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
