You cannot capture an MPEG stream from a video device in Windows Movie Maker (890419)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Microsoft Windows Movie Maker to capture video from a video device such as a TV tuner adaptor, a digital video camera, a VCR, or a DVD player, you may experience either of the following symptoms:

The video device is not listed in the Available devices box in the Video Capture Wizard dialog box.
You experience unpredictable results when you try to capture video from the device. For example, the captured video is missing audio or video.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows Movie Maker versions 2.1 and earlier do not support the capture of video from a device that uses an MPEG stream. If an MPEG stream is the only output type that a device supports, the device does not appear in the Available devices box. If a device supports the output of other media types, the device may appear in the Available devices box. However, we do not support the capture of MPEG streams from such devices.
