Windows XP client computers send FQDN DHCP option (81) request packets even if DNS dynamic update protocol registration is disabled globally (890210)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Windows XP-based client computer, you disable domain name system (DNS) dynamic update protocol registration globally by setting the DisableDynamicUpdate registry entry value to 1. You may find that the client computer continues to send the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) option (81) in a request packet to the DNS server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because DHCP clients do not read the DisableDynamicUpdate registry entry value correctly.
