You may receive an error message when you try to remove an assembly from the GAC on a computer that is running Application Center 2000 (890192)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Application Center 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you try to remove an assembly from the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) by using the GacUtil /u command on a computer that is running Microsoft Application Center 2000, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Cannot access file AssemblyName because it is being used by another process.
Note In the error message, AssemblyName is the name of the assembly that you are trying to remove.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the GAC replication driver creates and then locks the IMetaDataImport class while the driver parses the assembly scope. In this case, the GAC replication driver may not correctly release the IMetaDataImport class, and a handle leak may occur. This hotfix updates the GAC replication driver to release the IMetaDataImport class when the driver parses the assembly scope.
