There have been changes in Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 wireless networking standards. Because of these changes, there have also been changes in support for 802.11 wireless networks in Microsoft Windows 2000, in Microsoft Windows XP, and in Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

Changes in support for 802.11 wireless networks have occurred since the Microsoft Press book Deploying Secure 802.11 Wireless Networks with Microsoft Windows, by Joseph Davies, was published in August 2003. Among these changes are the following:
  • Microsoft 802.1X Authentication Client is now included in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
  • The Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) wireless security update is now included in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and in Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.
  • Windows XP SP2 and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 have many new wireless features. These features include an improved user interface, improved diagnostics, and the new Wireless Network Setup Wizard.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) includes the following items:
    • The wireless enhancements that are included in Windows XP SP2.
    • Updates to the Wireless Network (IEEE 802.11) Policies Group Policy extension.
