256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you enter a transaction in Microsoft Money 2005, you cannot select Category and Sub Category in separate lists.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the feature of separate lists for Category and Sub Category was removed from Money 2005.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue and use separate lists for Category and Sub Category, install the updates that are available for Money 2005, and then add the UseDualCatMode value to the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Start Money 2005.
  2. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Money.
  3. Verify that the version of Money 2005 that is installed is 14.0.0.1105 or a later version, and then click OK. If you have an earlier version of Money 2005 installed, follow these steps:
    1. On the Tools menu, point to Internet Updates, and then click Update Now.
    2. Click Yes when you are prompted to install the updates.
    3. After the updates are installed, click Exit on the File menu to quit Money 2005.
    4. Restart Money 2005.
    5. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Money.
    6. Verify that the version of Money 2005 that is installed is 14.0.0.1105 or a later version, and then click OK.
  4. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Money 2005.
  5. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  6. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Money\14.0

  7. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  8. Type UseDualCatMode, and then press ENTER.
  9. Right-click UseDualCatMode, and then click Modify.
  10. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
Note If you start Money and the settings still have not changed, this issue may be caused by having multiple profiles on the computer. If this issue occurs, follow the previous steps, and then add a new DWORD value to the following registry key as well:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Money\14.0

To change back to using a single list for Category and Sub Category, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Money 2005.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Money\14.0

MORE INFORMATION

In earlier versions of Microsoft Money, the Use a single list for categories and subcategories as well as classifications option on the Categories tab is available to integrate the categories and sub categories into a drop down list format when you enter transactions.

If the Use a single list for categories and subcategories as well as classifications option was not selected, you would see two lists when you enter a transaction, one for Categories and the other for Sub Categories.

After you upgrade to Money 2005, only one list is available for categories and sub categories.
