First keyboard character typed is not accepted after resuming from Suspend mode in Windows XP (889813)

SYMPTOMS

You resume a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer (such as a graphic order terminal) from Suspend mode, and you type the first character of text on the keyboard. The first keyboard character you type is not accepted. Additional keyboard characters you type are accepted.

Note You can put the computer in Suspend mode by pressing the STANDBY key. This key may be located near the numeric keys on the keyboard.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you use the No keyboard repeat FilterKeys option.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not use the No keyboard repeat FilterKeys option. Instead, use the Slow down keyboard repeat rates FilterKeys option.

To use the Slow down keyboard repeat rates FilterKeys option, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, in the Open box, type access.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. On the Keyboard tab, under FilterKeys, click Settings.
  3. In the Settings for FilterKeys dialog box, under Filter options, click Ignore quick keystrokes and slow down the repeat rate, and then click Settings.
  4. In the Advanced Settings for FilterKeys dialog box, click Slow down keyboard repeat rates, and then click OK.

    Note After you click Slow down keyboard repeat rates, you can select the Repeat delay and the Repeat rate that you want.
  5. Click OK to close the Settings for FilterKeys dialog box.
  6. Click OK to close the Accessibility Options dialog box.
