You receive a "One of the virtual hard disks could not be located" error message when you start a virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 (889515)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1
SYMPTOMSAfter you merge a differencing virtual hard disk into the
parent virtual hard disk, the virtual machine may try to access the former
differencing virtual hard disk. You use
the Virtual Disk Wizard
to merge the differencing virtual hard disk into the parent virtual hard disk
by clicking The file of the parent virtual hard disk, clicking
Next, and then clicking Finish. When you do
this, and then start the virtual machine that used the parent virtual hard
disk, you may receive the following error message: One of the virtual hard disks could not be located.
Please specify a new virtual hard disk.
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, you must reconnect to the
parent virtual hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click the affected virtual machine in the Virtual PC
Console, and then click Settings.
- Click the hard disk that was merged. For example, click
Hard disk 1.
- Click Virtual hard disk file, and then
click Browse.
- Locate the parent virtual hard disk. Typically this is
located in your My Virtual Machines folder in your My Documents
folder.
- Click Open and then click
OK.
STATUS This
behavior is by design.
