You cannot create an alternative installation source for Office 2003 by using the Custom Installation Wizard (889496)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003
  • Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003
  • Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003

SYMPTOMS

Suppose that you create an alternative installation source for Office 2003 by using the Custom Installation Wizard for the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup program. To do this, you add a mapped address or a UNC address for a network share as an alternative source. You do this on page 14 of the Custom Installation Wizard. In this scenario, the alternative source is not written to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\{ProductGUID}\SourceList

This issue will affect the resiliency of the Windows Installer and of the Office Source Engine if you manually delete the MSOCache folder from your computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you have enabled the Setup feature that is named Local Install Source. When it is enabled, the Local Install Source feature controls source management from the Windows Installer. The Local Install Source feature also lets you delete or rename the MSOCache folder. However, Office 2003 does not support the deleting or the renaming of the MSOCache folder, because the custom actions in the Office 2003 Setup program assume that MSOCache folder exists. If the folder is no longer available, the alternative source that you specified in the Custom Installation Wizard is not written to the registry subkey that is described in the Symptoms section.

Additionally, a network drive will not be recognized as a valid location for the local installation source. This is true whether it is a mapped address or a UNC address. You must use a local hard disk or a partition for the local installation source.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download and install the Local Installation Source Tool. The tool is available on the Change the Local Installation Source After the Installation Web page. To obtain the tool, visit the following Microsoft Web site: After you have downloaded the Local Installation Source Tool, you can use this tool to remove the local installation source or to move the location for the local installation source to a local hard disk or partition. However, if you move the local installation source, you must do the following:
  • You must move the local installation source to the root of the local drive or partition.
  • You must move the whole local installation source. This includes source files for all Office programs.

If you remove the local installation source, the alternative source entries will work and let you use a network share for the alternative source. However, in this scenario, you cannot use the local installation source to avoid the source requirement when you update the Office 2003 installation.

For more information about using the Local Installation Source Tool, see the instructions on the Change the Local Installation Source After the Installation Web page.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
