FIX: Valid credit card numbers are not accepted in Microsoft Commerce Server 2002 (889384)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Commerce Server 2002
  • Microsoft Commerce Server 2002 Feature Pack 1
  • Microsoft Commerce Server 2000

SYMPTOMS

Valid credit card numbers are not accepted by the order processing pipeline in Microsoft Commerce Server. Some credit card numbers that were issued in the year 2004 or that may be issued in a later year may not be accepted as valid numbers. If a credit card number is not accepted as a valid number, an order that uses the credit card number cannot be completed. When this problem occurs, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The credit-card number you provided is not valid. Please verify you payment information or use a different card.
Note Because this message can be customized in one of the resource files that are available with a Microsoft Commerce Server Sample site, the error message that you receive may be different.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the number of digits and the ranges of numbers that are permitted for some credit cards have changed. This Microsoft Commerce Server software update supports the new credit card numbers that have been issued.

824684 Description of the standard terminology that is used to describe Microsoft software updates

This Commerce Server software update applies if you use the ValidateCCNumber pipeline component to verify credit card numbers during the checkout process.

The ValidateCCNumber pipeline component first determines whether the credit card type that is specified in the order.cc_type key is one of the types that the ValidateCCNumber pipeline component accepts. The ValidateCCNumber pipeline component accepts VISA, MasterCard, AmericanExpress, Discover, and the abbreviations MC and AMEX.

The ValidateCCNumber pipeline component then examines the values that are stored in the order._cc_expmonth key and in the order._cc_expyear key to confirm that the credit card has not expired.

If the card is an accepted type, the component then runs a checksum test on the number that is stored in the order._cc_number key to make sure that the number is correctly formed. For example, if the specified credit card type is Discover, a well-formed number must start with a 3 and must be made up of 16 digits.
