SYMPTOMS

When you use a tape device with a medium-changer device and with a third-party backup program installed on your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, Windows 2000 may not be able to control the medium changer. In this scenario, the tape device unexpectedly goes offline, and backup operations are not completed successfully. You must restart your computer to restore connectivity to the medium changer and to the tape device.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the third-party backup program is not fully compliant with the Plug and Play feature in Windows 2000. When the medium changer or the tape device loses connectivity, the Plug and Play feature in Windows 2000 enumerates a new name for the device. Because the third-party program processes the names of devices when the computer restarts, this program does not recognize the new name of the device. Therefore, the device does not work as expected.

Add the Persistence registry entry after you install the hotfix

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To enable this hotfix after you install it, add the Persistence registry entry to the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2, and then set the registry entry to 1. When you do this, symbolic names that are used by the Plug and Play feature are persistent. If you set the Persistence registry entry to 0 (zero), or if you remove the Persistence registry entry, symbolic names are not persistent.

To enable the hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Tape

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type Persistence, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click the Persistence registry entry, and then click Modify.
  6. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, restart the computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Note This fix requires that Tape.sys be in use as the tape class device driver on the system. Some backup programs replace Tape.sys with their own class driver. If a third-party tape class device driver is in use, this update will not have any effect on the system.
