You cannot complete an Advanced Client installation when you use the Client Push Installation method in Systems Management Server 2003 (889325)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you try to install a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client by using the Client Push Installation method, you cannot complete the installation. Additionally, errors that are similar to the following are logged in the CCMSetup.log file on the client: MSI: Action 17:30:08: AppSearch. Searching for installed applications
MSI: Incompatible Cache options: Relative Path specified: Exactly one of MAXDRIVE or MAXDRIVESPACE expected.
Installation failed with error code 1603 CAUSEThis problem may occur if you configure the SMSCACHEDIR property to use a variable, such as %WINDIR% or %SYSTEMROOT%. The value of SMSCACHEDIR is passed to the Client.msi file as a string instead of as an expanded environment variable. For example, the value %WINDIR% is not translated as "C:\Windows."
Note This problem does not occur if you use a logon script to install the Advanced Client or if you manually install the Advanced Client.WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, follow these steps: - Start the SMS Administrator console.
- Create a new collection for each operating system that you want to install the Advanced Client on.
- Expand the Site Database (site code - site name)\Site Hierarchy\site code - site name\Site Settings container.
- Click Client Installation Method, right-click Client Push Installation, and then click Properties.
- On the Advanced Client tab, specify the folder where Windows is installed, and then click OK.
For example, to install the Advanced Client on Microsoft Windows 2000-based computers, type a value of SMSCACHEDIR=C:\WINNT. To install the Advanced Client on Microsoft Windows XP-based computers, type a value of SMSCACHEDIR=C:\WINDOWS. - In the SMS Administrator console, right-click the collection, point to All Tasks, and then click Install Client.
- Follow the instructions in the wizard to install the Advanced Client to the collection.
- Repeat steps 3 through step 7 for each collection that you created in step 2.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
