You receive an error message that references Bkdings.ttf when you try to install or remove Reader for the Pocket PC (888721)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC, version 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows CE for Pocket PC 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC on your Microsoft Pocket PC-based device, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The file \Windows\BKDINGS.ttf is in use or is in ROM. If the file is not in ROM please close the application and try again.

You may also receive this error message when you start Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC on your Microsoft Pocket PC-based device.
You may also receive this error message when you try to remove Reader for the Pocket PC from your Pocket PC-based device.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Reader for the Pocket PC on your Pocket PC-based device. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Tap Start, and then tap Settings.
    2. On the System tab, tap Memory.
    3. On the Running Programs tab, tap Microsoft Reader, and then tap Stop.
  2. Connect your Pocket PC-based device to your desktop computer, and then start Microsoft ActiveSync.
  3. Click Explore, double-click My Pocket PC, and then double-click Windows.
  4. Rename the following files. To rename a file, right-click the file name, and then click Rename.

    File nameRename to
    Bkdings.tffBkdings.xxx
    Frutiger.ttfFrutiger.xxx
    Frutbd.ttfFrutbd.xxx
    Frutit.ttfFrutit.xxx
  5. Soft reset your device. For information about how to soft reset your device, contact the device manufacturer.
  6. Remove Reader on your Pocket PC-based device. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Tap Start, and then tap Settings.
    2. On the System tab, tap Remove Programs.
    3. Tap Microsoft Reader, and then tap Remove.
  7. Install the latest version of Microsoft Reader. For more information about how to download and install the latest version of Reader, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, hard reset your Pocket PC-based device. For information about how to hard reset your device, contact the device manufacturer.

Note A hard reset will return your Pocket PC-based device to the state that it was in when the device was new. All data and programs that you have installed are erased during a hard reset.
