You receive error messages when you try to print or scan with the Canon MultiPass F20 in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (888574)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print to the Canon MultiPass F20 in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you cannot print. You receive the following error message:
Unable to communicate with the device.
Please start "MPService" from the Services applet in the Control Panel.
Then please right-click on the StatusMonitor to Reconnect and try again.
When you click OK on the error message, you then receive the following error message:
The print job failed to complete.
Reason:
Unable to communicate with the device.
The device may be turned off, or a cable may be disconnected.
Please make sure that the device is turned on, connected and functioning properly.
When you try to scan with the Canon MultiPass F20 in Windows XP SP2, you cannot scan. You receive the following error message:
This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose "Switch To" to activate the busy program and correct the problem.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the update that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

884020 Programs that connect to IP addresses that are in the loopback address range may not work as you expect in Windows XP Service Pack 2
