A Windows Media Video file that you paused may automatically start playing again when you change the screen mode in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (888571)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Media Center in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to play a Windows Media Video file (.wmv) or an Advanced Systems Format file (.asf) file, the file may automatically start playing again from the start.

Note The most common file types that are contained in an .asf file are Windows Media Audio (.wma) and Windows Media Video (.wmv).

This behavior may also occur when you play an Advanced Stream Redirector file (.asx). An .asx file is usually a type of XML-based metafile that can contain a list of Windows Media files, such as .wmv and .asf, to play.

Note An .asx file is frequently used with streaming video servers where multiple .asf files are played back sequentially.

This behavior occurs when you follow these steps:
  1. You play a Windows Media Video file or an Advanced Systems Format file in full-screen mode.
  2. You click Pause.
  3. You change the screen to windowed mode.
  4. You click Play.
Note This behavior also occurs when you change the display from windowed mode to full-screen mode.

CAUSE

When Media Center changes from full-screen mode to windowed mode, Media Center interprets the change as a device loss.

By default, the Media Center internal playback graph must be rebuilt for the Windows Media Video file after a device loss. This rebuild is accomplished by stopping and then restarting the Windows Media Video file. When you follow the steps in the "Symptoms" section, the Windows Media Video file starts playing again from the start so that it can finish rebuilding the graph.
