You receive a "Specified print monitor is unknown" error message when you try to install a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8000 series printer on a Windows 2000 server cluster (888208)

SYMPTOMS

If you try to install a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8000 series printer on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based server cluster, you receive the following error message:
Specified print monitor is unknown

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8000 series printer drivers do not recognize the cluster resource dynamic link library (.dll) file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps.

Important These steps assume that you have previously created a Print Spooler resource on the server cluster.

Step 1: Create the port and the printer on each cluster node

On each cluster node that must support this printer, create a port, and then install the printer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Click Next, click Local Printer, click to clear the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box, and then click Next.
  3. Click Create a new port, click Standard TCP/IP Port in the Type box, and then click Next.
  4. Click Next, type the host name or the IP address of the printer in the Printer Name or IP Address box, leave the default entry in the Port Name box, and then click Next.
  5. If an Additional Port Information Required page appears, type any required port information, and then click Next.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. In the Add Printer Wizard, click HP in the Manufacturers list, click the HP LaserJet 8000 series printer that you want to install in the Printers box, and then click Next.
  8. Type a name for the printer in the Printer name box, click Next, and then click Do not share this printer.
  9. Click Next, click No, click Next, and then click Finish

Step 2: Configure the clustered printer

After you configure the network port on each cluster node, and after you install the HP LaserJet 8000 series printer on each cluster node, configure the shared printer on the server cluster. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type \\Network Name of the Print Spooler resource on your server cluster, and then click OK.
  2. Double-click Printers, and then double-click Add Printer.
  3. In the Add Printer Wizard, click Next.
  4. Leave the default option Remote print server \\Network Name of the Print Spooler resource on your server cluster selected, and then click Next.
  5. Leave the default option Use the following port selected, verify that the correct port appears in the list of ports, and then click Next.
  6. In the Manufacturers list, click HP, click the same printer that you installed on the cluster nodes in the Printers list, and then click Next.
  7. If you are prompted to keep your existing driver, click Keep existing driver (recommended), and then click Next.
  8. In the Printer name box, type a name for the clustered printer, and then click Next.
  9. Click Share as, type a share name for the printer, and then click Next.
  10. In the Location box, type a description of the printer's location, and then click Next.
  11. Under Do you want to print a test page, click No, click Next, and then click Finish.
