Running 16-bit programs are not listed in Task Manager after you install the MS04-032 security update on a Windows XP-based or Windows 2000-based computer (887820)

SYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario. You have more than 16 16-bit programs running on a Microsoft Windows XP-based or Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer. After you install the MS04-032 security update on the computer, the running instances of the 16-bit programs are not listed under the Ntvdm.exe process in Task Manager. If you use the VDMEnumTaskWOWEx function to enumerate more than 16 16-bit programs that run under a shared Ntvdm.exe process, the function returns 0 after the 17th program. RESOLUTIONWindows XP hotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
