The "Compact virtual hard disk" task takes a long time to finish in Virtual Server 2005 (887731)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Compact virtual hard disk after you inspect a virtual hard disk in Microsoft Virtual Server 2005, the task might take a long time to finish. You might also experience this problem when you merge virtual disks. For example, if you merge a differencing hard disk image with the parent image, the task might take a long time to finish.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the host operating system is using Intel Physical Addressing Extension (PAE) support. You may want to turn on PAE support if your computer has more than 4 gigabytes (GB) of installed memory.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off PAE support in the host operating system. For information about how to do this, review the articles that are listed in the "More Information" section.
