SYMPTOMS

After you save a virtual machine and move it to a different host computer, you may not be able to start the virtual machine. When this issue occurs, the virtual machine remains in a saved state, and the following event may be recorded in the event log on the host computer:Event Source: Virtual Server
Event Category: Virtual Machine
Event ID: 1078
User: N/A
Description: VirtualMachineName could not be restored because an unexpected error occurred

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the CPU of the new host computer uses a different architecture than the CPU of the host computer where you saved the virtual machine. For example, this issue may occur when you move a saved virtual machine from a host computer that uses an Intel Pentium CPU to a host computer that uses an AMD CPU.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, shut down your virtual machine before you move it to a host computer that uses a different CPU architecture.
