Exchange Server permissions are removed by the RecreateDefPol.exe tool in Windows 2000 Server (887442)
The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
SYMPTOMSWhen you use the Recreatedefpol.exe tool on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server, the permissions that Exchange Server must have to run correctly are removed.
Note Recreatedefpol.exe is a tool that is used to restore the default domain policies when these policies are accidentally deleted.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, follow these steps: - Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
- Right-click Microsoft Exchange System Attendant, and then click Stop.
- Right-click Microsoft Search, and then click Stop.
- Run the Recreatedefpol.exe
tool.
- Log off Windows, and then log back on as an administrator.
- Insert the Exchange Server CD into your computer's CD drive or DVD drive.
- Click Start, click Run, type CD_Drive:\Path_Of_i386_Folder\setup /domainprep, and then click OK. This resets the permissions for Exchange Server.
- Click Start, click Run, type secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy /enforce, and then click OK.
- Click Start, click Run, type
secedit /refreshpolicy user_policy /enforce, and then click OK.
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
- In the Application log, verify that the SceClil 1704 event is recorded.
Note If the SceClil 1704 event is not recorded, you must continue to troubleshoot Group Policy errors.
- In Services, right-click Microsoft Exchange System Attendant, and then click Start.
- Right-click Microsoft Search, and then click Start.
Exchange Server now has the required permissions.
