"Library not registered" error message when you try to start the Local Users and Computers MMC snap-in on a Windows 2000-based computer (887438)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the Local Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in on your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to access the computer \\ComputerName.
The error was: library not registered.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when particular subkeys and values are missing from the Windows registry.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To resolve this issue, register the Activeds.tlb file in the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start a text editor such as Notepad.
  2. Copy the following text, and then paste it into Notepad: 
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

  3. Click File, click Save As, and then save the file. Use a file name that is similar to the following:

    Import.reg



    Note The file name extension must be .reg.
  4. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  5. Click Registry, click Import Registry File, locate the registry file that you saved in step 3, and then click Open.
  6. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
