SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a hotfix on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
This update requires Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 to be installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method one: Follow the steps in the hotfix article

Examine the version of the file that the hotfix replaces. If the version of the file on your computer is the same version or a later version of the file that the hotfix installs, follow the steps in the article that describes the hotfix. Some articles contain workaround steps or steps that you can take to troubleshoot problems that occur when you install the hotfix. For example, you may have to change the value of a registry entry after you install the hotfix.

Method two: Bypass the scan for prerequisites when you install the hotfix

When you install a hotfix, the installation program verifies that all prerequisites are installed before it installs the hotfix. When this program incorrectly finds that Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is not installed, run the program by using the /n:v command-line option to bypass the scan for prerequisites. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. At the command prompt, switch to the folder that contains the hotfix file.
  3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    hotfix_file /n:v

For example, if the hotfix file is Q123456.exe, type the following command:

    q123456.exe /n:v
