Wide Screen TV aspect ratio is not automatically corrected in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (887317)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with a wide screen TV attached, Media Center does not detect the wide screen correctly. Therefore, the screen's aspect ratio is not automatically corrected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Media Center does not support the Wide Screen Signalling (WSS) detection signal that is transmitted on line 23 of analogue broadcasts.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the Zoom option. To access the Zoom option, press the MORE INFO button on the remote control while a DVD is playing.

Note The MORE INFO button may be labeled the DETAILS button on some remote controls.

The first time that you select Zoom, Media Center stretches and crops the image vertically and horizontally while maintaining the aspect ratio. The second time that you select Zoom, Media Center stretches the image horizontally to fill the screen. If you select Zoom again, you will be returned to the regular display mode.

Notes
  • This feature will work only if the DVD that you are playing supports Zoom.
  • This feature is available only when you run Media Center in 16x9 display width. To select the 16x9 display width, right-click the desktop, and then click Properties. Click the Settings tab, and then drag the slider to specify 1024x576 (16x9 ratio).
